Solutions for the future
Not that many future solutions have been put in place to ensure the Murray survives but there are a small handfull of things. Some of them involve you.
As i mentioned before in the current issues page South Australia is not getting nearly enough water from the basin. Only 7% is going to us and the 93% is used in the other major states. The main plan to change this involves you. The main solutions is to get South Australia's to speak up and voice to the Prime Minster and other leaders that we want this to change. What you can do is go to fightforthemurray.com.au and follow they're three step process. The first step is to sign they're petition. You have to put down your name, email and postcode. The email is only for giving you updates and the postcode is to see where abouts in Australia you are. The second step is to share the campaign. You can do this by sending an email to friends, following them on twitter or liking their facebook page. The third and final step is to share your story. You can upload a photo or video telling why you love the Murray. You can also send a message to Julia Gillard and Tony Burk telling them that the Murray needs more water.
The only other plans that are being put in place to ensure the Murray's future are the Murray-Darling initiatives that were established in 2008 by the Murray-Darling Basin Comission. These plans are:
The Living Murray – A project which aims to return 500GL to the Murray-Darling water system.
Cap On Irrigation Diversions - This is a limit on how much water can be diverted from the Murray-Darling for human uses each year.
Native Fish Strategy - An ongoing plan which aims to restore the fish population to 60% of what it was before European settlers came.
Basin Salinity Manegment Strategy - An effort to control the levels of salinity in the river.
